  • A great column from @freedomrideblog for Black Agenda Report:

Donald Trump was blamed for the poor response in 2020 but it is clear that Americans are in trouble regardless of who occupies the White House because profits determine the response to a health care crisis. Joe Biden declared that there is nothing he can do about the disease trajectory and blithely stated that an additional 200,000 deaths are inevitable. His pre-inaugural promise of a $2,000 stimulus payment is now null and void. The sum of $1,400 is now on the table and no one will see that amount until March or April.

The failed state continues failing the people. It cannot do otherwise. The government does the bidding of the billionaire donor class, just as it did before COVID-19 struck.

Capitalism is quite literally killing thousands of people in the US every day. A people-first economy that could be achieved under socialism is a better path forward.

  • Leaving The Democratic Party and Registering with the People’s Party

With news that the People’s Party is officially registered in California, I went ahead and changed my party preference to People’s Party.

Let’s face it, the corporate duopoly gave people the choice between a blue racist rapist asshole, and a red racist rapist asshole in 2020. I’m incredibly happy to have voted for neither, and instead voted Green.

If we are to have better choices in leadership, we need to build political power away from institutions that are bought and owned by corporations. As Margaret Kimberley’s column that I linked to yesterday put it:

The government does the bidding of the billionaire donor class

I know electoral politics aren’t the end-all solution to all the issues we have, but I’m optimistic of what a political party without corporate links and a progressive agenda can do.

Ultimately, I dream of a day when we aren’t slaves to capitalism, our planet isn’t on fire, and where all people can live a life of dignity and happiness. My hope is that building a third party of the people is a step in that direction.

Update on 02/06/2021: The People’s Party posted a tweet that disturbs me greatly. I’ll be monitoring this closely to see if I need to change my party preference yet again.
